SUNDAY FUNDAY: Play for a Purpose
Just over one week ago, on March 15th our team, new guests, and regulars gathered on a rainy Sunday afternoon for two purposes: to have a lot of fun and raise a lot of money for a purpose greater than themselves. In response to receiving the Unstoppable Achievement Award from the Unstoppable foundation, Football legend and local celebrity Warren Moon challenged the University of Washington and his network in the greater Seattle area to help him raise $25,000 to sponsor a village in rural Kenya. He matched every donation penny for penny to achieve this goal. The sponsorship, while focused on providing education to developing areas around the world, also ensures clean water, health care, income education for adults, and housing in order to create a sustainable developmental trend by creating a solid infrastructure and foundation for growth.
520 stepped up to the challenge encouraging people to gather on a Sunday afternoon to contribute to the cause. We set up a raffle table, including a Warren Moon autographed vintage Seahawks Jersey and football, a chocolate stiletto by Lesly Chacon’s WOWChocolates, and an original painting by local artist and team member Lindsey Malo. We also had T-shirts available for signing by Warren for those who contributed $100 or more. Before the end of the evening, Warren stood up and spoke about his life, his connection to the community, and the importance of education to him and what it did for his life. In a very short period of time, we were able to raise over $2200 and make a lot of people, young and old, very happy. It was a truly fun-filled and heart-warming Sunday for those that faced the torrential downpours to make it all the way to our home-away-from-home at 520.
Due to the success 520 was recognized one week later at The Unstoppable Foundation’s 6th Annual Gala in Los Angeles for their generous contribution both by Warren Moon himself and the foundation.
